Securely Wiping Deleted Files

Its a little known fact that Windows contains a tool that allows you to erase deleted file remnants that remain on the hard disk.  When a file is deleted in windows, it is not securely deleted and can often be recovered with special tools.

To remove these deleted fragments you can use the cipher command.  This command has been around since Windows XP.

cipher /W:<volume>

Where <volume> is the volume that you want to securely delete the deleted file remnants.  This will write 0s followed by random numbers and then 0s again to all of the unused blocks on the volume.
