Configuring CentOS 5 to emulate RHEL 5 for installs

Some installations will try to check the version of the operating system installed.  CentOS 5 is a recompile of the RHEL5 code, but does not contain some of the identifiers used to signify that an installation is RHEL.

One notable installation that does check for the OS version is the Dell Open Manage Server Administrator node.  If you try to install it on CentOS it complains that it does not recognize the operating system and fails to install.

To make the OS look like RHEL 5 to the installation, type the following as root:

echo "Tikanga" >/etc/redhat-release

Now the installation will properly detect the OS as RHEL 5 and install.
